The Best Kept Secret for Texas Homeschoolers: Inside the Houston Homeschool Store

If you’re homeschooling in the Houston area, there’s one place you absolutely need to know about: the Houston Homeschool Store.

This local gem is packed with everything a homeschool family could want—affordable curriculum, used books, educational games, teacher resources, and even hands-on materials for every subject.

Whether you’re brand-new to homeschooling or a veteran looking for specific items, the Houston Homeschool Store makes it easy to find what you need without the guesswork of online ordering.

Flip Through Homeschool Curriculum

One of the best things about shopping at the Houston Homeschool Store is the ability to flip through actual curriculum before buying.

You can browse popular homeschool brands like Abeka, Saxon, Apologia, and more—plus find hidden gems in the used books section that you won’t find online.

This hands-on experience gives parents confidence when choosing the right materials for their children’s learning styles and grade levels. Maybe I’m old-school, but there’s something about acutally holding a physical copy in your hand that a glimpse on the internet cannot compete with.

After flipping through a hard-copy, I have actually put items back that I was convinced beforehand was for me, and purchased things I wouldn’t have even known about if I had not seen it in store.

Bring Homeschool Curriculum to Sell

I don’t know about you but I’ve been a bit of a curriculum hog in the past. I bet quite a few of us homeschool moms fall into this category. Some of the resources and curriculum I gather work out, and some do not.

Or perhaps also like me, families with grown children have passed down their books and old curriculum to you and you’ve got a big heap of books that you’re never going to look at or use.

Look no further. Bring them to the homeschool store!

As soon as you walk in, you will usually see some of the staff sorting through books and curriculum, writing things down, and calling out titles. It is here that you drop off your bag of unused books/curriculum, sign your name and number, and wash your hands of it! Seriously, it’s so easy.

As you shop the store, the awesome staff will sort through your stuff and write down what they can offer you. They may take all of your things or only some.

Once you’re done shopping, you walk to the check-out counter and tell them you also “sold” today. They will find your slip of paper and tell you what they can offer you. They are not cheap! I was shocked at how much they offered me. It substantially decreased my bill for the new curriculum I was purchasing.

Whatever they did not take you have the option of taking back home with you or putting it on their “free curriculum” shelf. It’s a lovely option if you don’t want to carry it back home to sit in that old familiar heap again.

Homeschool Community

This isn’t just a store—it’s a hub for the local homeschool community. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and always ready to help with suggestions or advice based on your child’s educational needs. You will also find MANY other homeschool families browsing the aisles who are usually keen to strike up a conversation if you want to talk!

There’s something reassuring about speaking to people who are in the thick of it with you. They can share your grievances and pass on tips on what has worked for them. You’ll find a little sitting area towards the back of the store where many of these conversations take place.

The store also has a kid section in the back – near the adult sitting area – packed with toys and homeschool manipulatives. Your kiddos can be tucked away playing with other homeschool kids while you chat or browse! ***Chef’s Kiss***

A bit of their precious history taken straight from their website:

Randy and Alexie Swirsky are the proud parents of eight children, and each was homeschooled from kindergarten through 12th grade. They started homeschooling their oldest child in 1990, and the youngest graduated in 2018.

During the 1990’s, obtaining curriculum was considerably more difficult than it is today. Out of a desire to help local homeschoolers and to create a family business where their children could work alongside them, in 1998 Randy and Alexie set up a dozen or so bookcases of curricula for sale inside his CPA office. From the beginning, they endeavored to sell both new and used materials in order to offer as wide a selection as possible. Business grew quickly and after several months the mini-store moved to a small retail space in the Oak Forest neighborhood of Houston.

Having long outgrown the Oak Forest location, in 2012 the store moved to a much larger, newly constructed building in the northwest part of Houston; this is our current location on Ann Lane. Come and visit! The Swirskys and their team of homeschool-mom-consultants and high school and college students are ready to answer your questions and help you find the best materials to meet your child’s needs.

Whether you’re shopping for homeschool curriculum, looking for hands-on math manipulatives, or just need a little homeschool encouragement, the Houston Homeschool Store is the go-to destination for Houston-area families. Save money, find resources faster, and connect with a community that understands your homeschool journey—all under one roof.

Have you visited the Houston Homeschool Store yet? I’d love to hear what you think of it!

P.S. Always remember: A good but imperfect homeschool day can still be just right!
