Why & How to Teach the Books of the New Testament?

The New Testament lays out the specifics of the gospel. Teaching your kids the order of the books helps them navigate Scripture with confidence, builds memory skills, and introduces them to the people, stories, and lessons that shape our faith.

  • 1. Sing a Song

Especially for Christian homeschool families, having a structured way to teach the books of the Bible is a key part of faith-based education. It’s also a great opportunity for interactive Bible learning that sticks.

One of the easiest ways for kids to memorize the books of the New Testament is through song. You can find several catchy New Testament books of the Bible songs for kids on YouTube. Music aids memory—and it makes reciting the books way more fun!

  • 2. Use a Printable Worsheet

Hands-on learning helps reinforce memory. Our free New Testament worksheet printable at the bottom of this post is designed to be easy and uses the time-tested method of writing to help your kiddo memorize!

  • 3. Make Flashcards

Make DIY flashcards with each book of the New Testament. Turn it into a game: lay out the cards and race to put them in order, or quiz each other with “what comes next” challenges. This is a favorite among homeschool Bible curriculum games!

  • 4. Break it into Sections

Help your child learn the books in categories (like Gospels, History, Epistles, and Apocalyptic Prophecy). Learning in smaller chunks makes it easier for younger minds to absorb.

  • 5. Make it a Daily Bible Time Activity

Consistency is key. During your homeschool Bible lesson each morning, take 5 minutes to review the books of the New Testament together. Repetition is the secret to long-term retention.

How to Incorporate Bible Memorization into Your Homeschool Routine

Including New Testament Bible study in your homeschool schedule doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Set aside a dedicated time block once or twice a week for Bible memorization. You can pair it with story time, Scripture reading, or even art activities where your child draws scenes from the books they’re learning.

Using printables and interactive tools makes learning the books of the Bible part of a well-rounded Christian homeschooling experience.

How to Use Our Free Printable

Our free worksheet is pretty self explanatory, but I did want to mention a few tips to help!

The entire document is 5 pages long. They gradually become more challenging with the goal of your child being able to completely write all 27 books from memory without a reference tool/page. The size of the font is intentionally picked. It is large enough to be seen well, but small enough so that your kiddo will have to write with neat handwriting to fit letters in appropriate spaces.

You might start by printing out all of the pages for a complete set. However, as your child keeps working through the pages, you might find you need to camp out on a certain worksheet for a bit and even repeat it a few times before moving on. If this is the case, you can just select that particular page to print in your print settings and not have to print out the whole set again.

This might be especially helpful to keep in mind with elementary aged kids. Instead of asking them to complete 1 full worksheet that day, you might have them only fill in 1 or 2 ROWS that day. As the parent/guardian you have a good sense as to what is too much or too little and should adjust accordingly!

I cannot stress this enough, encourage your kiddo! Enouragement helps instill confidence, which many kids so desperately need. It is likely they will not soar through these pages the first time perfectly. They will forget, they will make mistakes. That is part of the nature of learning!

Point out to them things they did better than last time. Have them complete half the page from memory and then the other half using the reference page. Help them master these worksheets at a speed that is appropriate for them! Practice really does make progress! Show your kiddo the beauty of that truth!

Page 1:

This page lists the full (27) names of the books of the NT. It is for studying and to use as a reference tool at your discretion!

Page 2:

This page uses the memory tool of “missing letters.” Your kiddo will see the exact same grid-like layout of the New Testament books as they did on page 1. However, this time a few letters will be missing from each book name and your child will need to fill in the missing letter.

Page 3:

This page is silimar to page 2 but HARDER! A few more letters will be missing from each book name. Sometimes these missing letters will be the first letter of the book name and sometimes there will be 2 missing letters beside eachother.

Page 4:

Your kiddo will find the same sized grid as they are used to seeing, but the squares will be completely blank. They will need to fill in as many blanks as they can from memory.

Page 5:

This page’s layout is different than its predecessors and that is intentional! Your child will find two numbered columns. They again will fill in as many books as they can. The differing layout helps intensify your kid’s memory by taking away the help of the familiar grid.
