My bears have collected 4 or 5 junior ranger badges a piece from our adventures. I get a kick out of seeing them raise their little right hands and repeat a junior ranger pledge after the park ranger. They look forward to this at every national park we visit.
By the way, make sure you stop in at the visitor center first, go up to the front desk, and ask for the junior ranger packet. The idea is that your kid has assignments to do and things to search for during their visit at the park. At the end of the visit, go back to the front desk and, if the packet is completed, a badge will be rewarded!

My particular favorite tactile element, (and I do mean I geeked out over it), was a 4’x4′ topographical map of the whole battlefield. When you pressed a button, the story was told of how the battles played out and small lights on the map lit up to show where the story was describing.
Afterward, take the 7-mile self-guided driving tour. It’s perfect for families with kids, as you can stop at various battle points and walk short trails at your own pace. Make sure to bring water and snacks — and don’t forget your camera to capture the scenic views!
A quick add on, not only is this park famous for these civil war battles, but it also holds a portion of the “Trail of Tears” path. The self-guided tour on the app takes you to this trail as one of the stops. Stepping on the path really helps you visualize what the poor souls who walked this trail went through.
